Part of Words on Monday at Kings Place
Curated by Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design
with Ralph Rugoff, Director, Hayward Gallery
Ralph Rugoff will explore a pivotal development in late twentieth century art: the emergence of a new approach to painting in which artists made explicit use of photographic source materials. Initially pioneered by figures such as Andy Warhol, Gerhard Richter, Richard Hamilton and Vija Celmins, this increasingly important genre of painting has seen artists draw on a wide range of photographic materials, including snapshots, news images, family portraits and archival photos, to create pictures that address the contemporary social landscape as well as the role played by mass media in representing it.
